Due to unforeseen complications, I was not able to post this week's podcast on time, but one day late is better than never. I want to be consistent on having weekly shows so I'm putting one out regardless of the slow week in MMA news.
This week Ski and I talk about Bellator, Randy Couture's relationship with the UFC, "Showtime" Pettis' injury and we even make a mention of Lorenzo Lamas. Hope you enjoy, reply the the post or tweet me (@rolowankenobi) or Ski (@ski5163 with any suggestions for a show name.

The Great Return of the Bloggin Guatemalan

After a year and a half hiatus from my beloved blog, I have made a return in an evolved form. Since my last post as the Bloggin Guatemalan, this chapĂn went on to write for North Lake College's News Register where I covered Soccer, Basketball, and Baseball. There I became the sports editor and received a chance to cover the Dallas Mavericks and the PGA tournament the HP Byron Nelson. In my time with the Register, I won two Texas Intercollegiate Press Association awards for best sports feature and best sports news story. I also won a first place Texas Community College Journalism Association award for best sports news.
In the Fall of 2012, I transferred to the University of North Texas to complete my bachelor's degree in journalism where I had planned on joining the North Texas Daily and continue my writing career there. Unfortunately, due to my conflicting schedule, I was only able to write two articles for the Daily before I had to step away. Since then I have been inactive in both wring for a news paper and for my blog. I still watch MMA religiously, and it saddens me that i have not been able to share my opinion with my 12 followers.
Well today I make my return along with the help of my old friend Brent "Ski" Crawford, we have recorded a podcast talking about MMA, we will attempt to make this a weekly occurrence and hopefully I can back in the swing of thing as far as posting on my blog. Enjoy the first edition of the Rolo and Ski show (show title is subject to change and open for suggestions)

UFC CONSPIRACY!!!! (UFC 137 is a PR Stunt)

On the day following one of the greatest World Series games of all time, it's hard to think about anything else besides baseball. But we are also on the eve of UFC 137 and I would like to direct your attention towards what Dana White and the Fertittas are staging.
As the 6 of you who read this blog may know, I have been insistent that Nick Diaz would be the person that dethrones the Welterweight king Georges St Pierre. After Diaz destroyed Paul Daley in his last Strike Force title defense, UFC executives saw the potential of a “Super fight”. UFC champ vs. Strike Force Champ. This set off a series of events that has me calling shenanigans.

·         June 14th 2011 - UFC President Dana White announces St Pierre vs. Diaz to headline UFC 137 on Oct 29th.
For the hardcore MMA fans it was a dream match come true. Unfortunately this fight did not catch the attention of the casual fan and let’s face it, the casual fan is ultimately the majority of the PPV sales.
·         August 08th – Spike TV announces that their 3-part series, UFC Primetime, would feature the UFC 137 headliners
Still, nobody cared. This where I believe the conspiracy starts. GSP vs Diaz is promised to be a classic but there was no hype to set it up. So White plots a PR stunt
·         Sept 06th – Diaz no-shows Toronto presser
·         Sept 07th – Diaz no-shows Las Vegas presser and is scratched from title fight and replaced by Carlos Condit who was scheduled to fight BJ Penn on the co-main event. Dana White says "Nick Diaz can't handle the pressure of a major main event
·         Sept 08th – Diaz rebooked to fight B.J Penn in co-main event of UFC 137
At this point, I get a little suspicious. As a young man that is known to “not play the game”, it’s possible that Diaz no-showed these events. It is not even plausible that someone would leave Dana hanging and make him look like a fool and in return be rewarded with a co-main event fight against an all-time great. Let’s move on.
·         Sept 21st – Dana White tells MMAjunkie.com “if Diaz is victorious and there's no more drama along the way he could be back in line for a title shot.”

This is where I become the irate, Vietnam veteran, POW, conspiracy theorist, crazy man. I figured it out! Dana White set up Diaz to miss the pressers and his intention the whole time was to switch the opponents of the main and co main event and the reasoning is as follows:
Diaz is a relative unknown to the common folk and will tune in to watch BJ walk through this guy and put him back on track. Right? Wrong! When Diaz puts on a boxing clinic and puts away Penn in convincing fashion, people will be shocked and Diaz will become a house hold name. I also sense another WWE moment during the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan (ie Chael Sonnen) Diaz will surely run his mouth and call out GSP and call him a lot of expletives and the audience in the house and around the world will be hooked for a GSP vs Diaz showdown.
I know what you’re thinking. “Well what if Condit beats St Pierre?” That was the only reason why I hadn’t posted my conspiracy theory before. It had a big hole and I had no explanation for it. And then it happened.
·         Oct 18th –Georges St Pierre pulls out UFC 137 (knee injury)  Penn vs. Diaz named main event of UFC 137
Wow! Are you serious?! This is really happening. Whatever happened to the "Nick Diaz can't handle the pressure of a major main event" quote? White is a very pridefull man and he would never let a fighter get away making a fool of him and reward them with a main event, title eliminator fight, he's cut fighters for less. Of course if Penn wins it will squash any hope of that fight ever happening and it will become this generation’s Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva. Sure they fought eventually but it was late in both of their careers and did anyone really care? The stage is set ….to set up a super fight. Saturday night UFC 137 it’s going down. Expect an “I told you so” from me very soon.

Jonny Bones Gets Snubbed at the ESPY's

Last night at the 2011 Espy Awards, Manny Pacquiao won the award for Best Fighter. Yes that’s right, a boxer. Out of the four nominees, there was one fighter that stood out head and shoulders above the rest, Jon “Bones” Jones. Let’s break this down for a moment. Sure Pacman is more accomplished than the young 23 year old champion but this award isn’t called the Best Fighting Career, it’s called Fighter of the Year. According to ESPN.com, Manny Pacquiao was nominated for his unanimous decision win over, then 38yr old, Shane Mosley in May of 2011 and for his November unanimous decision title fight victory against Antonio Margarito. During that same time span, Johnny Bones fought 4 times and finished all 4 opponents by either TKO or submission. The last two were only 28 days apart which makes him that much more of a beast. The first of the two was versus promising prospect and previously undefeated Ryan Bader which Jones choked out in impressive fashion. His most recent fight was against UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua; Jones dismantled the champion. If an average person who does not know MMA would watch that fight they would think that it was a mismatch in Jones’ favor and that Rua had no business in the cage with someone of his caliber. To top it all off, in the process of dispatching Shogun, Jon Jones became the youngest champion in UFC history. The Espy’s are decided by fan voting but to think that more people voted for Pacquiao’s two snoozefest fights over Jones’ reign of terror is absurd and sickening. This just shows that people still aren’t well educated in the beautiful sport that is MMA and even though it is the fastest growing sport in the world, it still has a long way to go to truly become main steam. Jon Jones, you deserved that award.

Is Lebron Scared to Succeed?

Time after time Lebron James has oustanding performances during the regular season and through the opening rounds of the playoffs. But time after time he fails to come up big when it counts. The Finals. How can someone who shows that his "talents" and his athleticism is head and shoulders above the rest of the competition come up so small down the final stretch. This year in the Finals James only has 9 4th qtr points, Dirk has 44! Who can forget the 2005 NBA Finals when he was merely a spectator when the Spurs swept his Cavaliers. Lebron had 8 points in game 4 of the 2011 NBA Finals, the lowest in the playoffs in his career...Michael Jordan's lowest scoring playoff game was 22. Which brings up the question, are the expectations the world has for King James too high, unfair even? Is this who he is, a ridiculously talented athlete with no killer instict? The answer is not clear yet, only time will tell us. What is clear is that we have a great series on our hands and recommend we just sit back and enjoy it.
